Last night, as I was watching the Season 4 premiere of Mad Men, I was reminded once again of how beautifully the writers reference the time period in which it is set. In previous seasons, we’ve witnessed how the characters were affected by the Kennedy–Nixon Presidential election, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the tragic assassination of JFK. In the Season 4 opener, historical events, including the recent death of civil rights activist Andrew Goodman, confirm the year is 1964.
Though I don’t know what’s on tap this season for the crew of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce (try saying that 5 times fast!), I can go as far as to speculate which historical events might be featured in upcoming Mad Men episodes.
(NOTE: Move mouse over clips to preview. Click clip for details.) December 10, 1964: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. accepts the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and discrimination through non-violent means.
January 20, 1965: Lyndon B. Johnson is sworn in for his own term as U.S. President.
February 21, 1965: Assassination of Malcolm X.
March 8, 1965: 3,500 U.S. Marines arrive in South Vietnam, becoming the first American combat troops in Vietnam.
March 21, 1965: The third and successful Selma to Montgomery March took place after 2 violent and deadly attempts in previous weeks.
