Watch our NBA video clips and see how the Basketball Association of America (BAA) was founded on June 6, 1946 in New York City by the owners of the major ice hockey arenas in the Northwestern and Midwestern United States and Canada.

The BAA was the first league to play in large arenas in major cities. The first game was on November 1, 1946, between the New York Knickerbockers and Toronto Huskies at the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Canada. See a clip of one of the first All-Star games played in the BAA.

On August 3, 1949, the BAA agreed to merge with its rival league, National Basketball League (NBL), to increase its chance of competing better with other leagues. This created the National Basketball Association (NBA).

The NBA launched with 17 franchises, but went down to eight franchises in 1954. Original teams that are still in the league today include the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Sacramento Kings, Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks and the Philadelphia 76ers.

In 1976, the NBA acquired four more franchises from the American Basketball Association. The franchises added were the San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, and New Jersey Nets.

Currently, the NBA consists of 30 teams; 29 in the United States and one in Canada. Watch Magic Johnson clips and Larry Bird NBA footage as they paved the way for other leading NBA celebrities.
