Research and Development Manager

Position Description

Reporting to the CTO, the Research & Development Manager is responsible for the day to day management of personnel and processes within the R&D group. The R&D Manager is responsible for planning, managing, and reporting on utilization of development resources, including the Scrum/Agile Iteration/Sprint planning, working closely with product management in this activity. This role involves interacting with all business units, and executive management. Extremely strong organizational skills and approaches must be balanced by a pragmatic versatility, demonstrated with prior work experience. Applicants should have extensive experience in software development management (5 years or more), and a background or education in computer science is preferred, but not required. The position requires excellent communication skills, technical depth, and the ability to synthesize disparate information sources into a well managed process. Familiarity with Agile/Scrum/XP development methodologies is a requirement. Good working knowledge of both Windows and Mac operating systems is a requirement. Competence with Office, specifically Excel and Project us important. Direct experience as a software developer is helpful, but not a requirement.

Primary Objectives

  • Provide day to day leadership and management of the software engineering team.
  • Work closely with the product management team to define product direction.
  • Work closely with product managers to ensure development meets or exceeds customer requirements. This includes Agile “customer” expectation management.
  • Works with stakeholders on feature set schedule commitments.
  • Works closely with software architect and senior developers to ensure designs meet customer needs and fulfills roadmap objectives.
  • Manage the group software engineering schedules.
  • Ensure, and create as needed, software engineering processes, practices, and operations to facilitate high quality development in an Agile/Scrum environment.
  • Write technical product requirement documents to compliment product management documentation.
  • Implement and track development timelines.
  • Provide employee development and teambuilding.
  • Facilitate coaching and mentoring for team members.

Qualifications

  • 5 years of software development management experience required.
  • Technical aptitude.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Mac/Win/Linux/Office/Visio/Project
